South African, Leonard McCarthy, has been named by Robert Zoellick, the World Bank’s president, as the organisation’s new head of the Department of Institutional Integrity (INT).

Zoellick has explained that McCarthy’s reputation for integrity and talent in fighting corruption is the reasoning behind his appointment.

It is the first time that the chief of INT will be a vice president of the organisation.

During his time with the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa McCarthy was involved in investigating and prosecuting a number of high profile cases.

He has collaborated closely with a range of African governments, as well as law enforcement agencies across the world.

Under President Nelson Mandela, McCarthy served as director of public prosecutions.

He has also occupied a number of positions in government, in addition to being an experienced trial lawyer.

The World Bank has held talks with President Mbeki, with an agreement being reached that McCarthy would be released to assume his new role on 30 June of this year.
