Yesterday the South African Reserve Bank, South African Mint Company, Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Ministry of Finance declared the creation of a new coin dedicated to Nelson Mandela.
The coin itself will be a bi-metal R5 piece, designed to celebrate Mandela’s 90th birthday.
In contrast to most state figures who appear on currency, Mandela is portrayed wearing his signature pattern shirt.
The coins will go into circulation on 18th July, and five million have been minted.
Its introduction will coincide with the official celebrations of Mandela’s birthday.
