Nigerian firm Zenith Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding with UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund) to raise funds to help Nigerian children have their human rights realised.

Money raised will be used by UNICEF to fund its programmes in child survival, protection, development and participation.

UNICEF operates in over 160 countries across the globe, and its presence in Nigeria is one of its largest.

It does not receive funding from the UN, but instead relies upon governments, the private sector, programmes and international funds.

Through the deal reached with Zenith Bank, customers of the firm will be able to donate to Zenith Bank simply by using ATMs (Automated Teller Machines).

Further, correspondence from bank to customer may include literature related to UNICEF and forms with which to make one-off or regular donations.

Zenith Bank itself has pledged to make a donation this year of $100,000, irrespective of how much or how little its customer base provides.

MD and CEO Jim Ovia has stated that children are the future of the country and that Zenith Bank is committed to supporting them.

The deal will last for 2 years, after which it will be reviewed and may be extended.
