Bruce Wasserstein, chief executive officer and chairman of Lazard Ltd, has passed away at the age of 61.
Wasserstein was suffering a serious medical condition concerning an irregular heartbeat, and was in hospital, though the exact cause of death has not yet been ascertained.
Lazard’s Board of Directors have issued a statement expressing their shock and sadness at the tragic turn of events.
The Board praised Wasserstein as a good father and friend, and a visionary leader for the firm.
They went on to laud his mentoring and longterm vision, and extended their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Vice Chairman Steven J. Golub has been named by the board as interim CEO, with immediate effect.
