Banking giant HSBC has introduced a new piece of software, Rapport, to help safeguard its online banking operations.

The firm is encouraging its online banking customers to download Rapport for free from HSBC’s personal internet banking site.

Rapport safeguards customer data and fights off fraud by locking down browsers to restrict access to confidential information and the relevant websites.

The software is not a replacement for anti-virus or firewall software, and operates in conjunction with pre-existing security measures.

Digital Security Manager Nick Staib has reported that downloading numbers have exceeded all expectations, and expressed his delight at the widespread enthusiasm for anti-fraud software.

HSBC has also offered a number of tips to its online banking customers, warning against phishing e-mails which fraudulently claim to be from the bank to trick customers into giving away personal details, and keeping anti-virus software up to date.

Earlier this month online customer protection company Trusteer reported that many online banking customers were replicating their banking login details with less secure websites, putting themselves at risk of online theft.

More than seven out of ten (73%) replicated the username, with 47% using the username and password for their online bank account with another site.
