Abbey has been hit by an overnight technical glitch that means thousands of customers have failed to have their accounts topped up with BACS payments that include salaries and benefits.

The bank has promised that it is doing all it can to get the payments through and will honour direct debits and standing orders on affected accounts without imposing any fees.

Delayed payments should be made by 5pm today (Wednesday).

The bank, which is due to be rebranded Santander in the New Year, has around six million current account customers in the UK.

Once the name of its parent company is adopted, the lender will be launching a Santander “Zero” current account which comes with a fee-free overdraft facility (authorised and unauthorised) charging an interest rate of 12.9%.

In addition, withdrawals from overseas ATMs will be fee free and customers who pay at least £1,000 a month into their accounts will receive interest at 6% on credit balances, for the first year.

  1. For “glitch” read “incompetence”, which is the word that stands for customer service in Abbey/Santander.
Such consistency can only be marvelled at.
