Barclays Bank Kenya releases student credit cards

by Richard Kilner

Barclays Bank Kenya has said that, as part of its growth programme, it is to create credit cards aimed at university students.

The firm will also offer transactional accounts to students.

According to the bank’s chief executive officer, Adan Mohamed, the latest plans are part of the footprint expansion programme begun last year.

Mohamed made the statement at the opening of the bank’s latest branch, at Nairobi University.

Last year saw the bank’s profits rise from Sh6.4bn to Sh7bn, up by 9.4%.

However, political turbulence means that the next twelve months may not be quite as rosy.

As the bank has expanded it has seen its customer base grow, in addition to deposit and customer loan balances.

  1. Thank for your idea, but i see it as risking students because very few students have the ability to control the use of the credit cards. This is because, lets say about 90% of all students are spend-thrift hence it will lead to high costs for students for they earn less and most of them depend on their parents or guardians.Otherwise its not a bad idea.thanks
