Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) has won the Banking Innovation Award for the Year 2009 in recognition of its mobile phone banking service.

The award for the service, KCB Connect, was given to Dr. Tony Githuku, IT divisional director of the KCB.

The award was given in response to the KCB’s endeavours to lead the technological cutting edge in the East Africa region, and the mobile telephone bank KCB Connect, launched two months ago, was a striking example of this.

The service provides full banking services at the touch of a button for those with mobile telephones, numbering some 17 million in Kenya.

A key difference between KCB Connect and other systems of a similar ilk is that KCB Connect allows customers to open accounts solely through their mobile phone.
